Wike declines APC campaign leadership role, prioritizes state governance
Nyesom Wike explains refusal to head Tinubu's campaign, citing state loyalty and party affiliation.

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has publicly declined the opportunity to serve as the Director-General of President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 Presidential Campaign Council. Wike’s decision stems from his commitment to safeguarding his political strongholds and his non-affiliation with the All Progressives Congress (APC).
During a recent inspection of roads in Abuja, Wike expressed his reluctance to take on a campaign role that could jeopardize his influence in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory. He reflected on past instances where campaign directors lost their home states while supporting presidential candidates. Wike pointed out examples from previous elections, stating that former campaign directors like the Minister of Transport in 2015 and Bukola Saraki in 2019 faced significant losses in their respective states.
Wike emphasized, "If you are DG and you don’t win your state, what is the essence of the DG?" His comments highlight a pragmatic approach to political leadership, prioritizing effective governance over campaign titles.
The minister further clarified that his lack of membership in the APC was a significant factor in his decision. He stated, "I am not a member of APC. So the issue of their Presidential Campaign Council is out of the question." Despite his non-affiliation, Wike confirmed his intention to support Tinubu’s re-election through a cross-party initiative he termed the "Rainbow Coalition." This coalition aims to unite various political factions to bolster the President's chances in the upcoming elections while allowing participants to remain loyal to their respective parties.
Wike's approach contrasts with traditional campaign strategies, suggesting that political relevance should be measured by electoral outcomes rather than mere titles within campaign structures. He asserted that the performance of states in the upcoming elections would be the true indicator of political success, stating, "Nobody should use that as a yardstick to judge who will be the governor of any state."
As the political landscape evolves ahead of the 2027 elections, Wike’s focus remains on delivering results in both the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State, indicating a strategic shift towards local governance and coalition-building rather than high-profile campaign roles.
