In a decisive operation on August 19, 2026, troops from Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) successfully neutralized a suspected bandit and apprehended two individuals linked to a kidnapping plot in Benue State. The operations were carried out based on credible intelligence regarding criminal activities in the region.

The first operation took place along the Jortar–Atume axis in Ukum Local Government Area, where troops targeted a notorious bandit known by the nickname 'Cool Nigg@'. Reports indicate that this individual was allegedly leading a gang that had established an illegal checkpoint for kidnappings. During the encounter, the bandits opened fire on the troops, prompting a fierce exchange. The confrontation resulted in the death of 'Cool Nigg@', while other gang members managed to escape, abandoning a motorcycle that was later recovered by the soldiers.

Lt Ahmad Zubairu, the Acting Media Information Officer for OPWS, confirmed the developments in a statement released on August 23. He emphasized the importance of community cooperation in providing timely intelligence to security forces, which is crucial for the success of ongoing operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks in the state.

In a separate operation on the same day, soldiers moved to Gou Village in Logo Local Government Area, where they apprehended two suspects, identified as Terhile Iyo, 44, and Vershima Emmanuel, 32. These individuals allegedly confessed to planning a kidnapping targeting a local resident, Mrs. Balame Nyikwagh. During the arrest, troops seized a locally made pistol, a cartridge, five Tecno torchlight phones, an ATM card, an identity card, multiple SIM cards, and various charms from the suspects. Both men are currently in military custody as investigations continue.

Zubairu reiterated the commitment of OPWS to safeguarding lives and property in Benue State, urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. This operation is part of a broader strategy to enhance security and combat the rising tide of banditry and kidnapping in the region.

Recent months have seen a series of successful operations by Nigerian security forces targeting banditry and terrorism across various states, including a notable incident in Zamfara State where several bandits were neutralized, including a leader's son. The military has also thwarted terrorist attacks in Sokoto State, showcasing their ongoing efforts to restore peace and security in affected areas.
