APC urges INEC to enforce membership register compliance for 2027 elections
The All Progressives Congress has called on INEC to bar non-compliant parties from the upcoming elections.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has formally requested the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to prevent political parties that do not adhere to the membership register requirements outlined in the Electoral Act 2026 from participating in the 2027 general elections. This appeal was made in a letter dated October 9, signed by the party's National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, and National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru.
In the letter, the APC urged INEC to verify compliance with Section 77 of the Electoral Act, specifically regarding the submission of digital membership registers at least 21 days prior to party primaries, congresses, and conventions. The party emphasized the importance of enforcing the Supreme Court's ruling from September 24, 2026, in the case of INEC v Zenith Labour Party, which affirmed the necessity of these compliance measures.
The Supreme Court's judgment highlighted that only members listed in the approved register are eligible to participate in party primaries and conventions. It also clarified that political parties must use the submitted register exclusively for these activities, reinforcing the legal ramifications of failing to meet these requirements. The APC pointed out that the court's interpretation of Section 77 is crucial for ensuring internal democracy and transparent elections within political parties.
The letter detailed the legal framework established by the Supreme Court, which includes provisions that mandate timely submission of membership registers and restrict eligibility to vote or contest in elections to those whose names appear on the official register. The APC stated, "This interpretation by the Supreme Court demonstrates the mandatory character of the statutory requirements and the legal consequences of non-compliance by political parties."
The party also reminded INEC of its constitutional obligation to enforce the Supreme Court's ruling, citing Section 287(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which mandates that all authorities adhere to judicial decisions. The APC argued that INEC had provided ample time for political parties to comply with the statutory requirements and that any failure to do so would be unjustifiable.
Furthermore, the APC reiterated that political parties have the autonomy to nominate candidates; however, they must follow the legally prescribed procedures, which include conducting primaries for aspirants seeking elective positions. The party's call to action reflects its commitment to ensuring that the electoral process is conducted fairly and transparently, thereby promoting democratic principles within Nigeria's political landscape.
