Gunmen abduct three Cocoa Research Institute workers in Oyo, demand N120 million ransom
Three individuals, including two staff members of CRIN, were kidnapped in Oyo State, with a ransom of N120 million demanded for their release.

In a shocking incident in Oyo State, gunmen have kidnapped three individuals, including two employees of the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN) located in Idi Ayunre, demanding a ransom of N120 million for their release. The victims have been identified as Mrs. Eunice Babalola, the leader of CRIN's Central Nursery, and Mr. Kehinde Gbalajobi, an agricultural superintendent. The third victim is a resident of the institute's staff quarters but does not work for CRIN.
The abduction occurred during working hours on October 8, when Babalola and Gbalajobi were walking from the Central Nursery to the SS Quarters, where Babalola intended to pick up some personal items. A source revealed that their driver was supposed to meet them at the quarters after returning from the nursery with other staff members. However, they were intercepted by the armed assailants before reaching their destination.
Reports indicate that the kidnappers initially attempted to abduct more individuals at the Central Nursery but were thwarted by a fierce exchange of gunfire with security personnel stationed at the site. This confrontation prevented the assailants from capturing additional victims, highlighting the risks faced by workers in the area.
The gunmen have reportedly contacted the families of the victims, insisting on the hefty ransom for their release. The incident has raised serious concerns regarding the safety of both workers and residents within the CRIN premises, particularly in light of the assailants' attempt to expand their haul of captives.
The Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, confirmed the incident, stating that the victims were inspecting crops on the institute's grounds when they were taken. He assured the public that a manhunt has been initiated to locate the kidnappers and secure the victims' safe return. "Operational efforts are ongoing to ensure the victims’ safe return and bring those responsible to justice," Olayinka stated.
He also urged the community to assist the police by providing any useful information that could aid in the ongoing investigation. The police command is committed to deploying necessary resources to address the situation and has called on the public to report any credible information to the nearest police station or through established emergency channels.
As the investigation continues, the safety of workers at CRIN and surrounding areas remains a pressing concern, with this incident underscoring the ongoing challenges posed by insecurity in the region.
