The Nigerian Army has officially inaugurated a new Special Forces battalion aimed at bolstering its counter-terrorism operations and addressing the increasing security threats facing the nation. The ceremony took place on Friday, October 9, 2026, at the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Doma, Nasarawa State.

Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of Army Staff, highlighted the importance of this new battalion in enhancing the Army’s operational capabilities. He pointed out that the expansion of the Army's divisions from eight to twelve necessitated the development of additional specialized units to maintain operational effectiveness and broaden security coverage across Nigeria.

Shaibu emphasized that the new battalion is expected to significantly improve the Army's ability to respond to a variety of evolving threats. These include advanced tactics employed by adversaries, such as the use of drones and improvised explosive devices. The Chief of Army Staff noted that the personnel of the new battalion had undergone six months of rigorous training designed to enhance their combat skills, resilience, and adaptability in challenging environments.

The training regimen included navigating the Army's most complex obstacle course, which features 20 different challenges, as well as a unique maze designed to help soldiers overcome fears related to darkness and confined spaces. This comprehensive training aims to ensure that the soldiers are well-prepared for their specialized military assignments.

In his address, Shaibu urged the newly graduated forces to uphold professionalism in their duties, stressing the importance of discipline, precision, sound judgment, and respect for human rights. He reiterated that success in military operations should not compromise public trust, advocating for intelligence-led operations and collaboration with other military and security agencies to achieve sustainable security.

Major General Valentine Okoro, the Chief of Training (Army), affirmed that the training program was meticulously tailored to meet current operational demands and incorporate lessons learned from ongoing military engagements. Brigadier General Umar Abubakar, the Commandant of the Nigerian Army Special Forces School, also praised the extensive physical and tactical training the graduates underwent, preparing them for the challenges they will face in the field.

The establishment of this new battalion comes as part of the Nigerian Army's ongoing efforts to enhance its operational capabilities and effectively respond to the myriad security challenges confronting the nation.
