Federal Government settles eight months' allowance for tertiary education workers
The Federal Government has released eight months' arrears of allowances to non-academic staff in universities and colleges.

The Federal Government has announced the payment of eight months' arrears of the Consolidated Non-Academic Staff Tertiary Institutions Allowance (CONTA) to non-academic workers in federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. This decision comes shortly after these workers issued an ultimatum regarding their outstanding payments.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, confirmed the release of the funds on Wednesday, indicating that the payments cover the period from January to August 2026. Alausa emphasized that this move is part of the government's commitment to addressing staff welfare concerns within the tertiary education sector, which is crucial for maintaining the stability of the academic calendar.
Alausa stated, "The release of CONTA demonstrates the administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare and recognition of the critical role played by non-academic personnel in keeping tertiary institutions functional." He reiterated that the payment is part of broader efforts to promote industrial harmony and minimize disruptions to academic activities across the nation.
In his remarks, the minister assured that the Federal Ministry of Education would continue to engage in consultations with relevant unions, heads of institutions, and other stakeholders to resolve any outstanding issues. He called for cooperation from both academic and non-academic staff, as well as institutional authorities and unions, to foster a conducive working environment.
The government is focused on prioritizing staff welfare, ensuring institutional stability, and enhancing human capital development to improve learning outcomes in Nigeria. Alausa concluded by reaffirming the Federal Government's commitment to fulfilling its obligations to personnel in the tertiary education sector, aligning with the objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at addressing welfare issues and supporting the development of human capital in the country.
