Benue Governor Alia vows to clear 11-month salary backlog for teachers
At the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration, Governor Alia promised to address salary arrears owed to teachers.

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has assured teachers that his administration will resolve the 11-month salary arrears owed to them under the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB). This commitment was made during the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration held at IBB Square in Makurdi, where the governor was represented by his deputy, Sam Ode.
Governor Alia outlined a plan to alleviate the financial burden on educators by paying an additional month’s salary alongside their regular monthly payments until the outstanding arrears are fully settled. He emphasized the importance of education in his administration’s agenda, highlighting efforts to enhance the welfare and working conditions of teachers across the state.
In addition to addressing salary issues, Alia noted that his government has implemented several initiatives aimed at improving the educational landscape in Benue. These include the adoption of a harmonised retirement age for teachers and the introduction of an automated payroll system designed to prevent financial leakages and ensure accountability in salary payments.
The governor also mentioned that over 9,000 teachers have been recruited under his administration, and more than 400 classrooms have either been constructed or renovated to provide better learning environments. Furthermore, the government has supplied furniture to schools and initiated professional development and retraining programs for teachers to enhance their skills and effectiveness.
During the event, Governor Alia expressed his gratitude to the teachers for their dedication and significant role in shaping the future of the state. He praised the efforts of Dr. Grace Adagba, the Executive Chairman of SUBEB, for her contributions toward transforming basic education in Benue.
The Commissioner for Education and Knowledge Management, Margaret Adamu, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary for Basic Education, Mrs. Bibiana Tyoishi, reiterated the government’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for effective teaching and learning.
The celebration, themed “Standing with Teachers, 60 Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing Its Status and Shaping Our Future,” featured a march-past, entertainment, and various presentations, underscoring the vital role of educators in society.
