Akpabio emphasizes National Assembly's role in advancing Nigerians' hopes
Senate President Godswill Akpabio highlights the National Assembly's duty in addressing citizens' aspirations during a global parliamentary gathering.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has asserted that the National Assembly serves as a crucial link between the aspirations of ordinary Nigerians and government action. Speaking at the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Arusha, Tanzania, Akpabio emphasized the importance of inclusion, trust, and opportunity as fundamental elements of a democracy that genuinely benefits its citizens.
During his address, Akpabio articulated that the effectiveness of democracy should not solely be measured by electoral outcomes or economic indicators, but rather by its tangible impact on the daily lives of the populace. He stated, "If progress is not seen in our people, our work is not finished. Trust is the invisible currency of democracy. We cannot command it, demand it or legislate it into existence. We earn it through fairness, transparency and accountability."
Akpabio further elaborated on the responsibilities of the National Assembly, highlighting its role in legislation, representation, appropriation, and oversight. He noted that the Assembly serves as a platform for the voices of citizens, especially those who may not have direct access to legislative chambers. "Every promise kept strengthens trust; every citizen heard brings government closer to the people," he remarked.
The Senate President pointed out that Nigeria's rich diversity necessitates a commitment to inclusion, stating that no citizen or community should feel marginalized in the quest for a shared national future. He remarked, "Our many peoples, languages, cultures and faiths are sources of strength. No citizen should be a stranger in his own country, and no community should stand at the margins of our common future."
Akpabio also underscored the current administration's commitment to reforms aimed at enhancing participation and expanding opportunities for all Nigerians. He mentioned the establishment of regional development institutions designed to bring development closer to communities and better address their specific needs. Additionally, he spoke about ongoing tax reforms aimed at creating a fairer system that alleviates the burden on low-income earners and small businesses.
In the realm of education, he highlighted the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, an initiative aimed at ensuring that financial limitations do not hinder the educational aspirations of young Nigerians. He emphasized the belief that poverty should not dictate a young person's potential, stating, "The circumstances of birth must not become the boundaries of destiny."
Concluding his address, Akpabio urged fellow parliamentarians to renew their commitment to building responsive and accountable institutions. He called for a collective effort to transform inclusion into active participation, trust into partnership, and opportunity into shared prosperity, asserting that every citizen should feel a sense of belonging and significance in the nation's ambitions. "That is the future Nigeria seeks. That is the future we must build together," he concluded.
