Christian Conscience urges issue-based campaigns ahead of 2027 elections
The Christian Conscience group calls for politicians to focus on national issues and avoid divisive tactics.

As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, the Christian Conscience, a non-denominational pressure group, has urged politicians to prioritize issue-based campaigns over ethnic and religious sentiments. This call comes as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set the campaign timelines, with presidential and National Assembly campaigns beginning on August 19, 2026, followed by governorship and State Houses of Assembly campaigns starting September 9, 2026.
In a statement released after their monthly meeting in Lagos, the group emphasized the importance of addressing national development issues. The statement was signed by the National Chairman, Yetunde Akinluyi, and National Secretary-General, Kolawole Verrals, and made public by the National Publicity Secretary, Tunji Oguntuase.
The Christian Conscience expressed concerns over the potential for campaigns to incite violence, intimidation, and the use of political thugs. They called on politicians to focus on how they plan to improve critical sectors such as education, healthcare, and the economy, stating, "Politicians should campaign with issues, not insults. Nigerians deserve to know what candidates intend to do about jobs, security, education, healthcare, infrastructure, and the economy."
The group further cautioned against the dangers of campaigns that exploit ethnic and religious divisions. They highlighted the need for political leaders to resist the temptation to weaponize these sentiments, asserting that statements which could inflame tensions have no place in a healthy democracy. They stated, "Political disagreement should never become personal hatred. Today’s opponent may become tomorrow’s partner in national development."
In addition to urging politicians to maintain mutual respect and unity, the Christian Conscience appealed to political parties and candidates to reject violence and intimidation during the electioneering process. They encouraged Nigerians to critically evaluate candidates based on their track records, policies, and character, demanding substantive answers to the country’s pressing challenges.
The group also underscored the importance of peaceful political participation for credible elections and national stability. They condemned the mobilization of groups to attack opponents or threaten voters, emphasizing that such actions undermine the electoral process.
In a related development, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has warned media outlets against disseminating misinformation and hate speech during the election period. The NBC called for fair and balanced coverage of political campaigns, urging broadcasters and online publishers to verify information before sharing it, to prevent the promotion or suppression of any political party or candidate.
As the election campaigns draw closer, the emphasis on issue-based discussions and the rejection of divisive tactics will be crucial in shaping a peaceful electoral environment in Nigeria.
