The Ogun State Police Command has officially reactivated Operation VELVET across all 20 local government areas in a bid to reinforce traffic regulations and enhance road safety. This initiative, directed by Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu, aims to ensure the smooth flow of vehicular movement on major highways while addressing traffic violations that pose risks to motorists and pedestrians alike.

The operation will focus on a range of infractions, including one-way driving, reckless driving, unauthorized use of emergency sirens, and vehicles displaying altered or covered registration plates. Additional targeted offenses include driving without a valid license, vehicular overloading, and indiscriminate parking that obstructs traffic flow. The police command emphasized the importance of these measures in promoting safer roads across the state.

Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni has mandated Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and heads of operational units to ensure effective implementation of the operation. He has also instructed that all personnel involved in the operation be thoroughly briefed and closely supervised to maintain professionalism and respect for citizens' fundamental rights.

In a statement, Ojajuni warned officers against exploiting the operation for personal gain, stating, "Operation VELVET must never serve as a pretext for extortion, illegal detention, harassment, or unauthorized impoundment of vehicles and documents." He reiterated that any officer found engaging in misconduct, including bribery or intimidation, would face immediate disciplinary action in accordance with police regulations. This warning is supported by the Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police Oluseyi Babasuyi, who reiterated the command's commitment to conducting the operation ethically.

The police command has urged motorists, fleet operators, and transport workers to comply with traffic regulations and cooperate with law enforcement during the operation. Furthermore, they advised the public against offering bribes to evade sanctions, emphasizing that such actions undermine the integrity of the enforcement process.

As the Ogun State Police Command intensifies its traffic enforcement efforts, it seeks the cooperation of residents to promote a safer driving environment. The reactivation of Operation VELVET marks a significant step in addressing traffic-related challenges in the Gateway State, with a particular focus on major highways and transit corridors.
