Candidates vying for the presidency and governorship in the 2027 elections are subject to a collective spending limit of N571 billion as stipulated by the recently enacted Electoral Act 2026. This regulation aims to ensure a more equitable electoral process by capping the financial resources candidates can allocate to their campaigns.

The breakdown of this spending limit reveals that there are 19 presidential candidates, each permitted to spend up to N10 billion, while 127 governorship candidates are allowed a maximum expenditure of N3 billion each. This structured financial framework is designed to curb excessive spending and promote transparency in the electoral process.

In a related development, the Federal Government has disclosed that it has expended N30.64 trillion since the removal of the petrol subsidy in June 2023. This expenditure is part of broader economic reforms aimed at mitigating the impact of subsidy removal on citizens. The government claims these policies have generated savings of N15.8 trillion for the Federation, although the additional spending has surpassed the available resources by N10.24 trillion.

In other news, veteran Nollywood actor Jide Kosoko has addressed concerns regarding his colleague Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, who is currently unwell. Kosoko has urged fans and well-wishers to continue their prayers for Hassan, stating that the family is unable to move him to alternative treatment facilities despite offers for assistance.

Meanwhile, former Commonwealth Games 200m champion Leon Baptiste has been sentenced to prison in Morocco following a conviction related to the sexual assault of a minor, ending weeks of speculation about his whereabouts.

Additionally, the management of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti has refuted claims that its Vice-Chancellor, Prof Joshua Ogunwole, was arrested in connection with the recent Osun State governorship election. Ogunwole served as the Chief Returning Officer for the election, and the university has clarified that these reports are unfounded.
