Tinubu establishes committee for five-year strategic defence plan
The new committee is tasked with drafting a comprehensive defence strategy within 90 days.

In a significant move towards enhancing Nigeria's national security, President Bola Tinubu has approved the formation of a committee dedicated to drafting a five-year strategic defence cooperation plan. This decision was announced by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, following the Federal Executive Council meeting held at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The newly established committee will include key figures in Nigeria's defence and security sectors. Members will consist of the National Security Adviser, the two Ministers of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff, and all service chiefs. Additionally, the committee will feature the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), and the Special Adviser to the President on Homeland Security, who will also serve as the secretariat for the committee.
Idris emphasized the urgency of the task, stating that the committee has been given a 90-day timeline to complete its work and submit the report to President Tinubu. This strategic initiative is expected to address various aspects of national defence and security, ensuring that Nigeria is better equipped to tackle emerging threats.
The establishment of this committee comes at a time when Nigeria faces numerous security challenges, including insurgency, banditry, and other forms of violence. By formulating a comprehensive defence strategy, the government aims to bolster its capabilities and improve coordination among various security agencies.
The formation of the committee reflects the administration's commitment to prioritizing national security and enhancing the effectiveness of the country's defence apparatus. As the committee begins its work, stakeholders in the security sector and the general public will be keenly watching the developments that arise from this initiative.
