The Centre for Reform and Public Advocacy (CFRPA) has expressed strong disapproval of the recent decision by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court to transfer their lawsuit against President Bola Tinubu from Kano to Abuja. The lawsuit, filed on June 26, 2026, questions the president's academic qualifications and raises constitutional issues regarding the educational requirements for presidential candidates as stipulated in the 1999 Constitution.

CFRPA's legal team, led by Kalu Kalu Agu, claims that the transfer order, granted at the request of Tinubu's legal representatives, is biased and undermines the integrity of the judicial process. The group argues that the swift approval of the transfer creates an impression of preferential treatment towards the president, which they believe erodes public confidence in the judiciary.

In their statement, the CFRPA outlined three primary reasons for opposing the relocation of the case. Firstly, they highlighted the logistical challenges posed by moving the proceedings to Abuja, as many of their witnesses and members reside in Kano. This shift could impose significant financial burdens on them, potentially hindering their ability to present their case effectively.

Secondly, the group accused the Chief Judge of engaging in what they termed 'forum shopping,' suggesting that the transfer was a strategic move to place the case in a more favorable environment for the president, away from the public scrutiny that would be present in Kano.

Lastly, CFRPA posed a direct challenge to President Tinubu, questioning why he would avoid defending himself in Kano if he has nothing to hide regarding the allegations surrounding his academic credentials. "If Mr. President has nothing to hide regarding the allegations of forgery of academic credentials, why is he afraid of going to the North to stand trial and defend himself in Kano?" they asked.

The CFRPA has called on the Chief Judge to reverse the transfer order immediately, insisting that the case should be heard in Kano, where it was originally filed. They assert that a leader who claims to represent all Nigerians should be willing to address constitutional questions in any part of the country.

As the situation unfolds, the CFRPA remains committed to pursuing the matter through all lawful means, determined to challenge what they perceive as attempts to undermine justice. The outcome of this legal battle could have significant implications for President Tinubu's administration as it continues to face scrutiny over various issues, including his academic credentials.
