Vice President Kashim Shettima returns early from leave ahead of campaign season
Kashim Shettima resumes duties two days early, coinciding with campaign launch for 2027 elections.

Vice President Kashim Shettima has made an early return to Nigeria after a two-week leave, resuming his official duties two days ahead of schedule. Shettima arrived in Abuja on the evening of August 18, 2026, as confirmed by several officials close to the Vice President.
Shettima's leave, which began on August 6, was his first since taking office on May 29, 2023. During this period, he was expected to engage in "study, reflection, and intellectual renewal," as stated by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha. The leave was intended to allow the Vice President to review ongoing government programs and enhance his understanding of both national and global policy issues, particularly as the administration gears up for the implementation of its Renewed Hope Agenda.
His early return aligns with the commencement of political campaigns for the upcoming 2027 elections, which officially began on August 19, as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Although Shettima has resumed his duties, he was notably absent from the Federal Executive Council meeting held on August 19, presided over by President Bola Tinubu.
Since taking office, Shettima has been actively involved in various strategic government initiatives, focusing on areas such as economic development, food security, humanitarian affairs, digital transformation, job creation, and regional cooperation. He also chairs the National Economic Council, which includes governors from all 36 states and other key public officials, emphasizing his role in coordinating national economic policies.
As the political landscape prepares for the upcoming elections, Shettima's return marks a significant moment as he re-engages with his responsibilities and the broader political agenda ahead of the electoral season.
