Tragic helicopter crash in Kenya claims lives of seven, including pilot Josh Outram
A helicopter crash near Mt. Ololokwe in Kenya resulted in the deaths of seven individuals, including renowned pilot Josh Outram.

A tragic helicopter crash occurred near Mt. Ololokwe in Samburu County, Kenya, on Wednesday morning, August 19, resulting in the deaths of all seven individuals on board. Among the deceased was Josh Outram, the founder of Africa Heli Adventures and a seasoned commercial pilot with over 15 years of flying experience.
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) confirmed the incident, stating that the Eurocopter EC130 B4, registered as 5Y-GYM, went down at approximately 9:13 AM local time. Reports indicate that the helicopter was en route from Soyian in Laikipia to Loisaba Conservancy when it crashed. However, there is some discrepancy regarding the flight path, as the KCAA also mentioned a route from Loisaba to Ewasonyiro.
Emergency response teams were dispatched to the crash site after witnesses reported seeing thick smoke rising from the area. The Samburu County Police Commander, David Nkoroi, confirmed the deployment of these teams to assist in the aftermath of the crash.
In addition to Outram, the other victims included Roger Duarte, Adam Navaty, Stephen Vasconquez, Henry Parra, Michael Contugi, and Suian Suarez. Outram was known for his deep connection to aviation, being a fourth-generation Kenyan. He completed his first solo flight in 2021 while pursuing his Private Pilot license, later earning a Commercial Pilot qualification.
Outram established Africa Heli Adventures to provide access to some of Kenya's most remote and beautiful landscapes. In previous interviews, he expressed his passion for flying, stating, "Without a helicopter, there are parts of Kenya that are inaccessible, and those parts that are, are some of the most beautiful. Flying gives you a whole new perspective of what Kenya truly looks like and takes you to places that are so remote and completely untouched."
His company not only offered scenic flights but also played a crucial role in wildlife conservation efforts. Africa Heli Adventures supported initiatives in Loisaba Conservancy, including wildlife monitoring, animal translocations, and darting operations. Outram was also involved in tree-planting projects in northern Kenya and had a strong commitment to the Reteti elephant sanctuary.
The loss of Josh Outram and the six other individuals marks a significant tragedy for the aviation and conservation communities in Kenya. Outram's legacy as a pilot dedicated to showcasing the beauty of Kenya and contributing to its conservation efforts will be remembered by many. The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing as authorities work to uncover more details about this devastating incident.
