A tragic incident unfolded late on Friday night when suspected gunmen attacked a mining site near the boundary of Kuru Jenta and Heipang in Plateau State, resulting in the deaths of two workers. The attack took place around 11:30 PM on October 2, 2026, while the victims were engaged in their night shift, despite a government-imposed curfew in effect at the time.

Community member Weng Bulus confirmed the fatalities, stating that both victims hailed from the Heipang District. He expressed deep concern over the incident, emphasizing the dangers of violating the curfew, particularly for those involved in mining activities during restricted hours. "Two persons from Heipang District were shot dead by suspected gunmen at the mining site around Kuru Jenta last night," Bulus reported on October 3.

The attack has raised alarms among local leaders, who are urging residents to adhere to the curfew to avoid unnecessary risks. Bulus specifically warned against night mining, highlighting that such activities could expose individuals to security threats.

Rwang Tengwong, a spokesperson for the Berom Youth Moulders Association, also condemned the killings, calling them unfortunate and unacceptable. He stressed the need for security agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident, identify the perpetrators, and ensure justice is served. Tengwong echoed Bulus's call for miners to cease operations after dark to enhance their safety.

Efforts to obtain a statement from the Plateau State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the spokesperson's phone was unreachable at the time of reporting. This incident underscores the ongoing security challenges in Plateau State, where mining activities have often been marred by violence and unrest.

As the community grapples with this tragedy, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of residents and preventing further violence, particularly during the hours when movement is restricted. The call for adherence to curfew regulations is more urgent than ever, as local leaders seek to protect their communities from the threats posed by such attacks.
