Julius Berger plans permanent fix for collapsed East-West Road in Delta State
Julius Berger Nigeria Plc is set to implement a permanent solution for the damaged East-West Road in Delta State, following heavy rainfall that caused its collapse.

Julius Berger Nigeria Plc has initiated plans to address the collapse of a section of the East-West Road in Agbarho, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State. The company is considering constructing either a mini-bridge or a multi-cell culvert as a permanent solution to the washed-out road, which suffered significant damage after six consecutive days of heavy rainfall.
During a recent inspection of the affected area by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Fredrick Wieser, the Regional Manager of Julius Berger, confirmed that the company is currently conducting surveys and hydraulic assessments to determine the most suitable structural solution. Wieser noted, "At present, we are only doing emergency work to enable traffic to flow. We are already on the ground carrying out a survey, and our design team is already working on the design."
The proposed permanent solution will depend on the results of the hydraulic calculations, which will dictate whether three or four culverts need to be constructed. Wieser emphasized the importance of these assessments in ensuring the longevity and effectiveness of the repair work.
Governor Oborevwori expressed the state government’s commitment to funding the necessary remedial works, highlighting that restoring traffic flow is the immediate priority. He explained that the heavy rainfall had caused an overwhelming volume of water from various parts of Agbarho to converge in the area, leading to increased hydraulic pressure that ultimately resulted in the road's failure.
The governor reached out to Julius Berger promptly after the incident, recognizing the company's expertise in managing such emergencies. "When I saw what happened as a result of the rainfall, which continued for about six days, and the place collapsed, I immediately called Julius Berger, knowing that they are very competent in this kind of intervention, to move in," he stated.
Oborevwori underscored the significance of the East-West Road, describing it as a crucial economic artery that connects Delta State with Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River states. He remarked, "This is the only road that leads to Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River. It is a major road; that is why it is called East-West Road."
In light of the challenges faced by motorists and residents due to the road collapse, the governor urged citizens not to politicize the situation. He called for a collective effort to support those affected, stating, "When people are in difficult times and facing challenges, we are supposed to support them and show empathy, rather than exploit the situation."
As emergency work continues to restore traffic flow, the state government and Julius Berger remain focused on implementing a long-term solution to prevent future occurrences of similar road failures.
