Wike commits to completing 10 key Abuja projects before 2027 elections
Minister Nyesom Wike pledges to finish major infrastructure projects in Abuja ahead of elections.

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has pledged that at least 10 major road and infrastructure projects in Abuja will be completed and ready for inauguration before the 2027 general elections. This commitment was made during an inspection of the ongoing Tungan Madaki-Zuba Road and Nile University-RR3 Road projects on Wednesday.
Wike's inspection aimed to assess the progress of projects initiated during the third anniversary of the FCT Administration. He expressed confidence in the contractors' ability to meet their delivery commitments, particularly highlighting the work of the China Geo-Engineering Corporation on the Tungan Madaki-Zuba Road project. The minister noted that five of the six box culverts for the project had already been completed, describing the pace of work as commendable.
"They have the capacity. I mean, they are not a new company. They have the capacity, they have the equipment. What’s important is if you have the equipment, and they have the equipment as part of capacity. So, they’ve been tested before now, so I have so much confidence in them," Wike stated.
Despite the progress, Wike acknowledged that the projects are capital-intensive and that some contractors have received less than 30 percent of their mobilization fees, which has not deterred them from continuing their work. He assured the contractors that the FCT Administration would meet its financial commitments to ensure timely project completion.
The minister reiterated that the administration is focused on completing 10 major projects by the end of the year, with plans for commissioning before the upcoming elections. "We are also visiting some other two projects tomorrow, believing that by the end of the year, we would have had up to 10 projects, as promised, lined up for commissioning before the general election," he added.
In addition to infrastructure projects, Wike announced intensified efforts to combat flooding in Abuja by removing structures obstructing waterways. He revealed that a demolition exercise, which began in Maitama, would extend to other areas of the capital where blockages have occurred. "We’ve just started somewhere. After that, we will move to another area. We are not going to end just with what we started yesterday," Wike emphasized.
Furthermore, Wike indicated that the Director of Development Control is under scrutiny for allegedly granting approvals to car dealerships operating on designated green areas. He ordered the immediate removal of such dealerships, stressing the importance of preserving green spaces for recreational and environmental purposes.
