In a tragic incident that underscores the perilous conditions for journalists in Mexico, Hamurabi Huesca Manzano was shot dead on Friday in Oaxaca state. This marks the ninth journalist killed in the country this year, according to the human rights organization Article 19.

Huesca Manzano, who owned the news website Pinotepa Comunica, was targeted by an armed group while he was with two other men. The attack resulted in fatal gunshot wounds, as reported by the state prosecutor's office. His website was known for covering political and local issues in Santiago Pinotepa Nacional, the city where he resided. In addition to his journalistic endeavors, Huesca Manzano also worked as a taxi driver.

Article 19 has called for the prosecutor's office to prioritize the investigation into Huesca Manzano's murder, emphasizing the need to recognize his journalistic contributions as a crucial aspect of the inquiry. The organization highlighted the ongoing violence against media professionals in Mexico, which has become one of the most dangerous countries for journalism.

According to Reporters Without Borders, over 150 media professionals have been killed in Mexico since 1994, reflecting a grim reality for those in the field. The rise in journalist fatalities this year continues to raise alarm about the safety of reporters, who often face threats and violence while attempting to inform the public.

The killing of Huesca Manzano is a stark reminder of the risks faced by journalists in Mexico, where freedom of the press is frequently under siege. As the nation grapples with this ongoing crisis, advocates are calling for stronger protections for journalists and accountability for those who perpetrate violence against them.
