Lecturers from three universities in Lagos State have officially suspended their strike, allowing them to return to teaching immediately. This decision has been met with relief from students and parents who have been affected by the disruption of academic activities.

The institutions involved in this development include Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH). The announcement was made on Friday by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) representatives from these institutions.

In a joint statement, the ASUU leadership expressed gratitude to various stakeholders who supported their cause during the negotiations. They acknowledged the contributions of the media, civil society organizations, traditional rulers, students, and parents in achieving this outcome. The negotiations primarily focused on improving staff welfare and addressing outstanding academic agreements that had been pending.

The statement was co-signed by Olusegun Babalola, Coordinator of the ASUU-LASU Steering Committee; Grace Abimbola, Acting Chairman of ASUU-LASUED; and Murisiku Onigemo, Chairman of ASUU-LASUSTECH. They noted, "Our struggle for improved staff welfare and the implementation of vital academic agreements has reached a significant milestone, largely due to the collective support of well-meaning individuals and organizations."

The ASUU leadership specifically thanked several groups for their support. They highlighted the role of the press and broadcasting organizations for their timely and investigative coverage, which helped communicate the lecturers' grievances effectively. They also acknowledged the solidarity shown by civil society organizations, including the Joint Action Front (JAF) and Education Rights Concern (ERC), which advocated for quality public tertiary education.

Traditional rulers were commended for their diplomatic efforts and counsel during the negotiations, which helped ease communication between the parties involved. The union also expressed appreciation to students and parents for their patience and understanding during the strike period, recognizing the sacrifices made by all parties.

As classes resume, the ASUU representatives reaffirmed their commitment to academic excellence and quality education in Lagos State. They also expressed hopes for continued dialogue with the Lagos State Government to ensure the full resolution of all outstanding issues related to staff welfare.

This suspension of the strike marks a significant step towards restoring normalcy in the affected universities, bringing an end to a period of uncertainty for students and their families.
