DStv has made a significant change to its subscription offerings in South Africa, replacing the Compact package with a new Sports bouquet. This transition, which took effect on September 17, 2026, aims to enhance the viewing experience for sports fans by providing a stronger emphasis on football and other live sports.

The new Sports package combines elements of the previous Compact offering with extensive coverage of major sporting events, including the Premier League, South Africa's PSL, Champions League football, cricket, local rugby, WWE, and UFC. The monthly subscription for this package remains at R399, which aligns with the previous pricing structure.

However, the change has not been without controversy. Some former Showmax subscribers have reported unexpected charges following the transition. Many had signed up for a promotional DStv Stream Compact subscription priced at R99 per month, which was intended to help them continue accessing content after the closure of Showmax. Instead, these customers have encountered bills that exceed the expected amount, leading to confusion and frustration.

One subscriber reported receiving a bill of R389.32 that included a Sports subscription they did not recognize, while another expressed concern over an account balance of R1,148. These complaints highlight the potential pitfalls when a subscription package undergoes a name change or reclassification, particularly when customers believe they are locked into a fixed price agreement.

In response to the backlash, MultiChoice, the parent company of DStv, acknowledged that some subscribers faced challenges during the migration process. The company has assured customers that those who qualified for the promotional price will retain it, despite the transition to the Sports package. Customers experiencing ongoing issues have been encouraged to reach out to DStv Customer Care for assistance.

It is important to note that this restructuring is specific to the South African market. DStv Nigeria continues to advertise the Compact package, and Nigerian subscribers should not interpret the changes in South Africa as affecting their own subscriptions. The DStv Nigeria website still promotes the Compact package, which includes access to Premier League football, UFC, movies, and other entertainment options.

For Nigerian viewers, the key takeaway is to remain aware of their local package details and to keep records of any promotional offers. As DStv continues to evolve under the ownership of French media giant Canal+, which took control in September 2025, subscribers are advised to stay informed about any potential changes that may arise in the future. The recent developments in South Africa serve as a reminder that clarity in billing and subscription agreements is crucial for maintaining customer trust, especially in a market where sports content is highly valued.
