A police officer was tragically killed on Thursday evening while en route to his duty post in the Chit area of Heipang District, Plateau State. The attack occurred around 7 PM along the Kwi-Beco road, a route connecting the Riyom and Barikin Ladi local government areas, when armed assailants ambushed him on his motorcycle.

Reports indicate that following the attack, the gunmen seized the officer's motorcycle, adding to the growing concerns regarding security in the region. The incident has sparked outrage and alarm among local community groups, particularly the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), which condemned the killing and expressed deep worries for the safety of civilians.

Rwang Tengwong, the spokesperson for the BYM, described the murder as "deeply troubling," emphasizing that the targeting of a security personnel raises significant questions about the safety of ordinary residents in the area. He stated, "The killing of a security operative raised serious concerns about the safety of civilians in the affected communities," urging authorities to take immediate action to address the escalating security crisis.

This incident is part of a troubling pattern of violence in Plateau State, which has seen a series of attacks despite recent government measures, including a curfew imposed in Mangu, Bokkos, and Barikin Ladi local government areas aimed at curbing unrest. However, the effectiveness of these measures is now under scrutiny as violence continues unabated.

The police have yet to issue a statement regarding the incident, and inquiries made to the Plateau State Police Command's spokesperson, DSP Alabo Alfred, have gone unanswered as of the time of this report. The ongoing violence has raised alarms, especially following another recent incident where former BYM chairman Rwas Paul Danladi was killed along the Gashish-Barkin Ladi road just days prior, on October 7, 2026.

The BYM has called for thorough investigations and enhanced surveillance in Barkin Ladi and surrounding areas to protect the community from further attacks. As the situation unfolds, the local population remains anxious about their safety amidst the rising tide of violence in the region.
