Dennis Hastert, who served as the longest-serving Republican Speaker of the US House of Representatives, has died at the age of 84. His passing occurred on Saturday night at his home in Illinois, where he was receiving hospice care, as confirmed by the Kendall County Coroner’s Office.

Hastert held the position of House Speaker from 1999 to 2007, becoming a significant figure in American politics during his tenure. His role placed him second in the presidential line of succession, marking him as one of the most influential leaders in Washington at the time. However, his political career ended in disgrace, overshadowed by admissions of sexual abuse involving teenage boys he had coached.

The former Speaker's downfall began with a federal investigation into suspicious bank withdrawals, which revealed payments linked to efforts to conceal his past abuses. In 2015, Hastert pleaded guilty to illegally structuring cash withdrawals to evade federal reporting requirements. These transactions were part of a $3.5 million settlement he reached with one of his victims. During his sentencing in 2016, Hastert publicly acknowledged his abusive past, stating, "They looked to me and I took advantage of them."

Prosecutors indicated that Hastert's abuse involved at least five boys, some as young as 14 years old, during his time as a teacher and wrestling coach at Yorkville High School in Illinois from the 1960s to early 1980s. Due to the expiration of the statutes of limitations, he could not be prosecuted for these sexual offenses. Instead, Hastert received a 15-month sentence for violating banking laws, with US District Judge Thomas Durkin labeling him a "serial child molester" during the proceedings.

Hastert's political career began in 1987 when he was elected to represent his Illinois district in the House. He ascended to the role of Speaker following the tumultuous departure of Newt Gingrich and the withdrawal of Bob Livingston as his successor. His time as Speaker ended when Democrats regained control of the House after the 2006 midterm elections.

After serving the majority of his prison sentence, Hastert was released in 2017. His death marks the end of a controversial chapter in American political history, leaving behind a legacy that intertwines significant political achievements with grave personal misconduct.
