Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has publicly declared his refusal to pay ransom for the release of his brothers, who were abducted by bandits last year. During a media interaction on Monday, Lawal emphasized his belief that paying ransom only serves to empower criminals and perpetuate the cycle of abductions in the state.

The governor recounted the harrowing experience of his brothers, Yusuf and Amba, who were taken captive in 2025. He made it clear to his family that he would not condone any ransom payments, stating, "You know, there are certain hard decisions you must take as a leader of the family... if anybody feels otherwise, he is free to go and pay and bring Yusuf and Amba back."

Lawal noted that the kidnappers eventually lowered their demands after negotiations failed, ultimately asking for a ₦150,000 recharge card. However, he remained resolute, insisting that he would not contribute any funds to criminals, urging family members to handle the matter instead.

The governor's stance is rooted in his conviction that paying kidnappers only strengthens their operations. He pointed out that previous negotiations with criminals in the region had yielded no positive outcomes, reinforcing his decision to reject ransom payments.

Governor Lawal's comments come at a time when Zamfara State continues to grapple with rampant banditry and kidnappings. In September, security forces rescued 41 individuals who had been abducted after their vehicle broke down on the Tsafe-Funtua Road. The state has witnessed numerous attacks in various communities, including Bungudu, Anka, and Tsafe, leading to significant loss of life and property.

Earlier this year, violent incidents included the ambush of security personnel, resulting in the deaths of five soldiers and a police inspector. Additionally, a series of attacks in February led to the deaths of 30 people and the abduction of several others in Anka Local Government Area.

In response to the escalating violence, Lawal's administration is reportedly working to enhance the state's security measures, particularly in areas most affected by banditry, such as Tsafe. The governor's firm stance against ransom payments reflects a broader strategy aimed at curbing the influence of criminal elements in Zamfara State and restoring safety for its residents.
