The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has issued a stern warning to commercial drivers and the public regarding the dangers of transporting parcels without knowing their contents. This advisory follows an incident involving a Lagos bus driver who was nearly charged with drug trafficking after he unknowingly delivered a package containing cocaine and methamphetamine.

Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA's Director of Media and Advocacy, shared the details of the case on his social media platform, revealing that the driver received a bottle of Fearless energy drink as a waybill for delivery to Ondo State. Unbeknownst to him, the bottle had been used to conceal illegal substances. The agency's operatives discovered the drugs during a routine inspection, leading to the driver's temporary detention.

Babafemi emphasized that the driver was fortunate to avoid a jail sentence, as NDLEA officers were able to trace and apprehend the individual who handed over the package. He noted the precarious nature of the situation, stating, "When they say don’t judge a book by its cover, it’s for a reason." He cautioned that while this driver was lucky, others might not be so fortunate, highlighting the serious implications of drug possession under Nigerian law.

The NDLEA spokesman reiterated the importance of verifying the contents of any parcel before accepting it, warning that ignorance is not a defense. "Please avoid taking parcels you don’t know its content because possession makes you culpable, that’s the law," he urged.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by individuals involved in parcel delivery services. In a related case, the NDLEA recently arrested a 25-year-old businessman at Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu for attempting to smuggle 72 wraps of cocaine to Portugal. The businessman reportedly turned to drug trafficking to cover expenses incurred during his wedding.

As the NDLEA continues to combat drug trafficking in Nigeria, they are urging all citizens, especially those in the transportation sector, to exercise caution and responsibility when handling packages. The agency's proactive measures aim to prevent similar situations and ensure that individuals are not unwittingly implicated in drug-related offenses.
