Wicknell Chivayo, a prominent businessman from Zimbabwe, and his wife, Lucy Muteke, tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash on September 30, 2026. The accident occurred in the Marondera rural area, approximately 70 kilometers east of Harare, shortly after the aircraft took off from Gandami in Chikomba district.

The helicopter, carrying a total of six individuals, went down at Kudenga Farm around 5:00 PM local time. According to police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the crash resulted in no survivors. Government spokesman Nick Mangwana confirmed the identities of those on board, which included Chivayo, his wife, three other passengers, and two pilots.

Herbert Chivayo, a family spokesperson, expressed the family's devastation in a statement to state broadcaster ZBC, saying, "We are at a loss for words after the tragic news."

Wicknell Chivayo, often referred to as "Sir Wicknell," was the managing director of Intratrek Zimbabwe and gained significant public attention through his involvement in various government contracts and philanthropic efforts. One of his notable projects was a $172 million solar power initiative in Gwanda, awarded to his company by the state-owned Zimbabwe Power Company. This project, however, was marred by legal disputes that persisted for years.

Chivayo's business dealings were not without controversy. He faced scrutiny regarding contracts tied to Zimbabwe's 2023 elections, but an investigation by the country's anti-corruption commission concluded in 2025 without finding any evidence of wrongdoing. Throughout his career, Chivayo maintained his innocence against all allegations of misconduct.

Beyond his business ventures, Chivayo was known for his extravagant lifestyle, often showcasing his wealth on social media. He was recognized for his generous gifts, including luxury cars and substantial monetary donations to musicians, religious leaders, and other public figures.

In the wake of this tragedy, tributes have poured in from various quarters, including Kenya's President William Ruto, who referred to Chivayo as a "dear friend." As investigations into the crash continue, the loss of Wicknell Chivayo and Lucy Muteke marks a significant moment in Zimbabwe's business and philanthropic landscape.
