Flydubai pilot recounts harrowing cockpit attack that threatened 170 lives
Captain Smit Machchhar bravely fought off a co-pilot's attack mid-flight, ensuring passenger safety.

Captain Smit Machchhar, the pilot of Flydubai Flight FZ1073, has shared his harrowing experience of a violent cockpit attack that nearly led to disaster for over 170 passengers. During a video call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Machchhar recounted the moment he was stabbed and beaten by his co-pilot but resolved to act despite his injuries.
The incident occurred during a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv when the aircraft unexpectedly dropped more than 17,000 feet over the Middle East. Approximately two and a half hours into the journey, the flight sent an emergency signal to air traffic control and switched to squawk 7500, indicating a hijacking in progress. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later confirmed that the co-pilot had attacked Machchhar and attempted to crash the plane.
Despite being injured and lying on the cockpit floor, Machchhar's instinct to protect his passengers kicked in. "I was lying on the floor injured but I told myself to go for one last push to open the door from inside," he explained. His determination, combined with the efforts of other crew members and two reserve pilots who were traveling as passengers, ultimately led to the safe landing of the aircraft at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia.
The flight landed safely at 06:58 local time, and Machchhar was immediately rushed to a hospital in Tabuk before being airlifted to Abu Dhabi, where he is reported to be in stable condition. The Indian embassy in the UAE confirmed that he is recovering well, with Ambassador Deepak Mittal expressing pride in Machchhar's bravery.
During his conversation with Prime Minister Modi, Machchhar emphasized his extensive flying experience, stating that he could sense what was happening to the aircraft even with his eyes closed. Modi praised the pilot's courage and quick decision-making, affirming that his actions saved countless lives and made India proud.
In a reflection on his recovery, Machchhar stated, "I am not looking at this wound like a wound because that would make my recovery even more difficult. I am looking at it as a journey which is slowly going on and will take time but I am confident that the recovery will be there and I will become fit and healthy again."
The incident has sparked widespread admiration for Machchhar on social media, with many hailing him as a hero for his quick thinking and bravery in the face of danger. As he continues his recovery, the pilot remains a symbol of resilience and courage in the aviation community.
