A violent clash between suspected cult groups in Osogbo, Osun State, on Friday has left two people dead and four others injured. The Osun State Police Command confirmed the incident, which occurred in the Oke-Baale area of the city.
According to police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi, the violence is believed to have been instigated by rival cult factions. One of the deceased has been identified as 'Small Rugged', with authorities still working to confirm his full identity. Ojelabi reported that two individuals died at the scene, while four others sustained gunshot wounds and were immediately transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The incident reportedly began at a lounge in the Owoeba community, located along the Osogbo-Ilesa Road, where the victims were socializing before the attack occurred. Eyewitness accounts describe a sudden eruption of gunfire and chaos as the assailants arrived at the lounge. A local resident, who requested anonymity due to security concerns, recounted the harrowing scene, stating, "We heard gunshots and noise in the afternoon. The deceased was with some people drinking when the assailants arrived. One of them was hit on the head by the assailants. He died on the spot. Another man was also shot by the assailants."
In response to the violence, Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Zungura has ordered tactical teams to deploy to the area to apprehend those responsible for the attack. The police have since evacuated the bodies from the scene and are actively investigating the incident to bring the perpetrators to justice.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding cult-related violence in Nigeria, particularly in Osun State, where such clashes have become increasingly common. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities as they work to restore peace in the community.
