A significant fire incident at a cooking gas plant in Kubwa, Abuja, has been attributed to a driver who reportedly drove against traffic and crashed into the facility. This revelation comes from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, which issued a statement detailing the events surrounding the fire.

The incident occurred early on Sunday, September 27, 2026, around 6:30 AM, following a distress call from a local resident. Responding swiftly, officers from the Kubwa Police Division arrived at the scene to find that the fire had already spread to adjacent shops and properties. In a coordinated effort, the Federal Fire Service was summoned to assist in controlling the blaze.

According to the police, preliminary investigations indicated that the driver of an unregistered Toyota 4Runner Jeep lost control while driving against traffic, leading to the crash into the gas plant. Following the accident, both the driver and the occupants of the vehicle fled the scene, prompting the police to initiate a manhunt.

SP Josephine Adeh, the spokesperson for the FCT Police, confirmed that the identity of the driver has been established, and efforts are underway to apprehend him. "While the Command is currently on the trail of the erring driver, having established his identity, the fire has been contained and no casualties have been recorded," she stated.

As investigations continue, the police have yet to assess the full extent of the property damage caused by the fire. However, they have assured residents that normal activities in the area have resumed.
