The Federal Ministry of Education has officially released the final list of ranked and approved textbooks for Nigerian schools, covering the academic years from 2026 to 2028. This announcement follows the completion of the first phase of a nationwide textbook ranking exercise aimed at enhancing the quality of educational materials available to students.

The approved textbooks cater to four specific educational levels: Primary 1, Primary 4, Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS 1), and Senior Secondary School 1 (SS 1). Each textbook is now equipped with a unique QR tracking code, which is intended to facilitate monitoring and ensure transparency in the selection and procurement processes of instructional materials.

According to the Ministry, the introduction of the QR tracking system is a significant step towards improving accountability in the educational sector. This initiative will allow for better identification and tracking of textbooks, thereby ensuring that schools utilize the correct materials aligned with the national curriculum. The Ministry acknowledged that the process of generating and assigning individual codes to each textbook contributed to the time taken to finalize the approved list.

The ranking exercise was conducted under the leadership of the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa'id Ahmad. Dr. Alausa has given his final approval to the list, which is now accessible to various stakeholders in the education sector.

The Ministry has indicated that a second phase of the ranking exercise is already in the works. This upcoming phase will cover additional classes, specifically Primary 2, Primary 5, JSS 2, and SS 2, and will also incorporate the same QR tracking measures.

In light of this development, the Ministry is urging publishers, schools, education authorities, and procurement agencies to consult the official list when selecting and purchasing textbooks for the affected classes. This initiative is part of a broader commitment by the federal government to ensure that students and teachers have access to relevant and high-quality educational materials.
