The recent formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 elections has ignited controversy, particularly surrounding the roles of Zacch Adedeji, Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), and Taminu Yakubu, Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation. Former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye has announced his intention to take legal action against Adedeji’s appointment, arguing that it poses a significant conflict of interest.

On Saturday, the APC unveiled its 108-member campaign council, with President Bola Tinubu named as chairman and Vice President Kashim Shettima as Vice Chairman I. Other notable appointments included former Zamfara State Governor Abdulaziz Yari as the Director-General and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma as Secretary. Adedeji was designated as the Deputy Director of Fundraising, while Yakubu was appointed Treasurer.

Melaye, a prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), expressed his concerns in a video posted on his official X account. He criticized the decision to include a serving public official in a partisan campaign role, questioning the implications for public service ethics and compliance with established rules. "The Chairman of FIRS is the Deputy Director for fundraising for Tinubu’s presidential campaign," he stated, emphasizing the potential for conflicting responsibilities.

As a legal practitioner, Melaye confirmed his plans to challenge Adedeji’s position in court, asserting that such an appointment raises serious questions about adherence to public service conduct. He remarked, "If that is not conflict of interest, I don’t know what else it would be," and reiterated his commitment to opposing Tinubu’s re-election bid.

In addition to Melaye’s criticisms, Musa Rabiu Kwankwaso, the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), also voiced his disapproval of the appointments. He stated that the inclusion of Adedeji and Yakubu undermines the institutional neutrality of their respective agencies, which are crucial for managing public revenue and national finances. Kwankwaso remarked, "The leadership of critical public institutions demands neutrality, integrity and public confidence."

Kwankwaso further urged Yari to reconsider his acceptance of the Director-General position, highlighting the economic and security challenges facing the North-West and the nation at large. He described the upcoming election as a battle between the suffering populace and those benefiting from the current system, calling on Nigerians to demand accountable governance.

The controversy surrounding the APC campaign council comes at a time when many citizens are grappling with economic hardship, unemployment, and insecurity. The decisions made by the ruling party in the lead-up to the 2027 elections are likely to be scrutinized closely as they reflect broader concerns about governance and public trust.
