In a significant move to tackle maternal health challenges in Nigeria, the Gates Foundation has partnered with the MTN Group Foundation to introduce AI and digital health tools aimed at benefiting 500,000 women, 5,000 health workers, and 500 primary healthcare facilities by 2030. This initiative seeks to address the persistent issue of high maternal mortality rates in the country, despite various interventions already in place.

Uche Amaonwu, the Nigeria Country Director for the Gates Foundation, emphasized that while the solutions to prevent maternal deaths are well-known—such as regular antenatal visits and skilled birth attendance—access to timely information and resources remains a critical barrier. Many women, especially in rural areas, often lack the necessary support to identify complications during pregnancy, leading to preventable deaths.

The partnership aims to bridge this gap by utilizing digital tools that provide reliable health information directly to pregnant women. For instance, a woman experiencing symptoms can use her mobile device to seek guidance, even in remote locations where access to healthcare facilities is limited. This is particularly crucial during nighttime when seeking immediate medical help can be challenging.

Amaonwu explained that the AI tools would help assess symptoms, such as bleeding, and advise users on whether they should seek urgent medical attention. The initiative also focuses on ensuring that women without smartphones can access affordable devices and data connectivity, thereby enhancing their ability to obtain critical health information.

In addition to benefiting women directly, the program also supports healthcare providers. Health workers will have access to AI-enabled devices that can assist them in making informed decisions regarding patient care. This dual approach is designed to improve communication and coordination within the healthcare system, allowing for quicker response times in emergencies.

The partnership will invest $25 million over four years, with both the Gates Foundation and MTN contributing equally. This funding will facilitate the distribution of devices, data connectivity, and the development of applications that provide accurate health advice in local languages, including Nigerian Pidgin, Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba.

To ensure the initiative’s sustainability, Amaonwu highlighted the importance of embedding the lessons learned into government programs and broader digital health strategies. This includes working with the Federal Ministry of Health to align the initiative with existing maternal health programs and to expand broadband access in underserved areas.

The pilot phase of the project will assess the effectiveness of the AI tools in improving access to maternal health information and services. By evaluating how well these tools work in real-world scenarios, the partnership aims to refine the approach before scaling it up across Nigeria.

Amaonwu expressed confidence in the initiative's potential, noting that reaching 500 healthcare facilities is a manageable goal, especially given the existing infrastructure of approximately 40,000 primary healthcare centers in the country. He also mentioned that the initiative would focus on vulnerable women in rural and underserved communities, ensuring that they receive the necessary training and support to utilize the technology effectively.

This innovative partnership represents a proactive step towards enhancing maternal healthcare in Nigeria, with the hope of significantly reducing maternal mortality rates and improving health outcomes for women across the nation.
