In an exciting development for students in Nigeria, Google has introduced a new initiative that grants eligible individuals free access to Google AI Plus for a full year. This offering, named the Gemini Student Offer, is aimed at students enrolled in accredited universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the country, and is set to commence ahead of the upcoming academic session.

The initiative, valued at approximately ₦92,400 per student, is available to those aged 18 and above. Notably, students who participated in the program last year can renew their subscription after confirming their student status. This move is part of Google's broader strategy to enhance educational opportunities by leveraging advanced artificial intelligence tools.

Google's Director for West and East Africa, Olumide Balogun, emphasized the importance of making AI-powered learning accessible, stating that the initiative aims to eliminate financial barriers for students. He remarked, “AI is the defining technological shift of our generation, and for Nigeria, with one of the youngest and most entrepreneurial populations in the world, it is an immediate leapfrog opportunity.” Balogun further highlighted that the program enables students to master complex subjects and develop essential digital skills necessary for competing in a global economy.

The Gemini Student Offer provides a range of advanced features through the Gemini app. Students will have access to tools such as Gemini Omni for enhanced communication, Gemini Live for real-time voice interactions, and Deep Research for academic projects. Additionally, the subscription allows for unlimited file uploads and 400GB of cloud storage, making it a comprehensive resource for academic success.

Google has designed the program to support educational growth rather than facilitate academic dishonesty. The Guided Learning mode within Gemini acts as a tutor, offering hints and guiding questions rather than direct answers. This approach was validated through a study conducted by Google DeepMind, which showed that students using Guided Learning achieved learning gains equivalent to 1.2 to 1.7 years in just eight weeks. Furthermore, over 90 percent of interactions were focused on understanding concepts, with only two percent leading to direct answers.

The technology is also compatible with Google Classroom, allowing educators to utilize Gemini while ensuring that student data remains secure and is not used to train Google’s AI models. Students will benefit from additional study tools like Gemini Study Notebooks, which can transform lecture notes and course materials into quizzes and lesson plans, enhancing their learning experience.

To take advantage of this offer, eligible students can verify their enrollment through SheerID and access the free 12-month subscription via Google’s dedicated student offer portal. This initiative marks a significant step towards integrating AI into education in Nigeria, providing students with the resources they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
