A resurgence of violence linked to cult activities in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, has reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least five individuals. The clashes, which erupted over the weekend, involved rival groups known as the Bobos and Greenlanders, with incidents occurring in Agudama, Obele, and the Back of St. Peters areas.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that the violence has raised alarms about the effectiveness of a peace accord previously established among various cult factions in the region. Disturbing reports indicate that a youth was killed and beheaded during an attack in Agudama, while another victim sustained a gunshot wound to the buttocks but was rescued by a neighbor. The condition of the injured individual remains unclear.

The police have confirmed the arrest of several suspects in connection with the ongoing violence and have stated that efforts are underway to restore order in the affected neighborhoods. Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed, assured the public that normalcy has been reinstated following police intervention.

In response to the escalating situation, Commissioner of Police for Bayelsa State, CP Ajao Saka Adewale, has ordered a comprehensive crackdown on cultism and related violence. He directed Divisional Police Officers and tactical commanders to enhance patrols in areas identified as vulnerable and to act swiftly on credible intelligence regarding potential clashes, initiation ceremonies, and recruitment drives.

The police command has emphasized its commitment to tackling cult-related crimes, warning that no one, regardless of status, will be exempt from investigation if suspected of involvement in such activities. The Bayelsa State Secret Cults/Societies and Similar Activities (Prohibition) Law, enacted in 2012 and amended in 2018, strictly prohibits cult membership and sponsorship, imposing severe penalties for violations.

Authorities have urged parents and guardians to monitor their children closely, warning against the dangers of cult involvement. Residents are also encouraged to report any suspicious activities related to cults, including planned attacks or recruitment efforts, to the nearest police station. The police have reiterated their stance against reprisals and have called for community cooperation in maintaining peace and security in the state.

As the situation develops, the Bayelsa State Police Command remains vigilant, aiming to prevent further violence and ensure the safety of all residents.
