Osita Okechukwu, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has expressed grave concerns regarding the impact of banditry on Nigeria's democratic processes, particularly following the recent governorship election in Osun State. In a statement released on Sunday, Okechukwu lamented the political ramifications of banditry, which he described as a significant tragedy affecting the nation's liberal democracy.

The APC chieftain highlighted that the violence associated with banditry has led to the loss of innocent lives in the lead-up to the Osun election. He pointed out that the issues surrounding banditry are evident in various societal challenges, including hate speech, violations of the rule of law, and delays in judicial proceedings, which collectively cost taxpayers millions of Naira.

Okechukwu emphasized the need for urgent action to combat the pervasive culture of banditry, stating, "We must urgently focus on eradicating the ‘banditry in all of us’ as we approach the 2027 general elections." He clarified that banditry is not confined to armed groups in remote areas but is also reflected in everyday political behaviors, such as intolerance and the erosion of democratic ethics.

Reflecting on the Osun election, Okechukwu expressed disappointment that such violence could occur in a state predominantly inhabited by the Yoruba, where historically, there has been a strong sense of unity among its Muslim and Christian populations. He questioned whether this internal strife among ethnic groups would challenge advocates of restructuring Nigeria along geopolitical lines.

The APC chieftain urged Nigerians to look beyond mere constitutional frameworks and to scrutinize the values and behaviors of both individuals and institutions. He asserted that for democracy to flourish, there must be a collective respect for human life, adherence to the rule of law, and a commitment to peaceful political competition.

As the nation gears up for the 2027 general elections, Okechukwu called for a profound introspection among citizens and political actors alike. He encouraged all Nigerians to prioritize the greater good of humanity and the nation over personal or partisan interests, thereby fostering a more stable and democratic society.
