Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, has expressed strong skepticism regarding the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar's recent promise to restore fuel subsidies in Nigeria. Sani described the pledge as a "political Trojan horse" aimed at securing votes ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking to reporters in Abuja, Sani pointed out that Atiku has historically supported the removal of fuel subsidies, making his current stance appear contradictory. He stated, "What he is saying is outright deception of Nigerians," emphasizing that Atiku's past advocacy for subsidy removal undermines the credibility of his latest promise.

Sani elaborated on the impracticality of reinstating subsidies, citing the significant financial burden they placed on the national treasury in previous years. He noted, "For a number of reasons, what he said is virtually impracticable." The former senator highlighted the trillions of naira spent on subsidizing petroleum products and the corruption associated with the subsidy regime, where numerous beneficiaries have faced legal challenges for misappropriating funds.

The senator acknowledged the hardships that the removal of subsidies has inflicted on ordinary Nigerians, stating that it has created a rift between the populace and the current administration. He urged citizens to critically evaluate Atiku's intentions, suggesting that the promise is merely a tactic to gain electoral support rather than a genuine commitment to address the economic challenges facing the nation.

Sani's comments reflect a broader concern among political observers about the sincerity of campaign promises in Nigeria, particularly as the country approaches the next election cycle. With economic conditions remaining a pressing issue for many Nigerians, the discourse surrounding fuel subsidies is likely to intensify in the coming months as candidates outline their platforms and proposals.
