The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State is urging authorities to take legal action against Chris Mbarie, the Chairman of Orlu Local Government Area, for allegedly making inciting remarks aimed at opposition political parties. The party's spokesperson, Lancelot Obiaku, condemned Mbarie's comments, which reportedly suggested that opposition parties would not be permitted to operate freely in the region as the 2027 general elections approach.

In a statement released to the press, Obiaku expressed deep concern over the language used by Mbarie, describing it as politically intimidating and potentially dangerous. He emphasized that such statements could undermine public safety and the integrity of the electoral process. The PDP has called on the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the context and intent behind Mbarie's remarks. Should the investigation reveal any criminal intent, the PDP demands that appropriate arrests and prosecutions follow.

Obiaku highlighted that no public official has the authority to declare any part of Imo State a political no-go area for opposition parties. He asserted that local government areas belong to the citizens, not to any political party or officeholder. The PDP's statement underscores the party's commitment to ensuring that citizens can freely associate, campaign, and support the political party of their choice without fear of intimidation.

The party also pointed out that this is not the first instance of alleged voter intimidation by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State. Obiaku recalled that during the last governorship election, the APC was accused of using town criers to threaten voters, warning them that they would face consequences if they did not support the party.

The PDP has made it clear that it will not tolerate any attempts to suppress voters or compromise the electoral process. Obiaku stated that the party is prepared to defend the rights of its members and supporters, pledging to document any threats and report violations to the relevant authorities.

Furthermore, the PDP has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), civil society organizations, the media, and international observers to monitor the political climate in Orlu and across Imo State as the elections draw near. The party insists that elections should reflect the will of the people and not be determined by intimidation or violence. Obiaku concluded by asserting that the APC's chances in future elections are slim without resorting to electoral misconduct.
