In a pressing call to action, the Chairman of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU), Professor Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye, has emphasized the necessity for universities in Nigeria to adapt to the evolving technological landscape, particularly in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI). Speaking at a recent event, Ezemonye warned that without significant changes, these institutions risk losing their relevance in a rapidly changing world.

Ezemonye, who also serves as the Vice-Chancellor of Igbinedion University, Okada, underscored the importance of resilience in educational institutions. He stated that universities must not only keep pace with technological advancements but also integrate AI into their curricula and administrative processes to better prepare students for the future job market.

The call for adaptation comes at a time when many sectors are increasingly relying on AI to enhance productivity and efficiency. By embracing these technologies, universities can improve the quality of education and research, ensuring that graduates possess the necessary skills to thrive in a competitive global economy.

Ezemonye's remarks reflect a growing recognition among academic leaders that traditional educational models may no longer suffice in meeting the needs of students and employers alike. He urged fellow vice-chancellors to take proactive steps in revising their academic programs and investing in AI technologies.

This initiative is seen as critical for maintaining the relevance of Nigerian universities, as the world moves towards a more digital and automated future. The integration of AI into higher education could also foster innovation and entrepreneurship among students, equipping them with tools to contribute effectively to the nation's development.

As the discourse around AI and education continues, it remains to be seen how quickly and effectively Nigerian universities will respond to this urgent call for transformation. The implications of their actions will likely shape the future of higher education in Nigeria and its alignment with global standards.
