As the Osun State governorship election approaches, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on all stakeholders to ensure the safety of journalists covering the event. In a statement released by the Osun State Council, the union highlighted the critical role that journalists play in the electoral process and urged political parties, security agencies, and election officials to facilitate a safe working environment.
The NUJ, led by Chairman Adeyemi Aboderin and Secretary Olalekan Akindoju, emphasized that journalists must be allowed to perform their duties without facing intimidation, harassment, or any form of obstruction. They also stressed the importance of prioritizing personal safety, advising journalists to avoid confrontations and to report any incidents that could jeopardize their ability to cover the election.
To enhance safety measures, the NUJ encouraged journalists to utilize the WaFlo WhatsApp-enabled live election incident reporting system. This platform, developed by the International Press Centre, allows journalists to document incidents of threats, harassment, and other forms of interference in real time. Journalists can access this service by sending "safemedia" to the designated WhatsApp number or through the provided link.
The union further urged security agencies to recognize the vital role of journalists in the democratic process and to ensure their protection at polling units and collation centers. Maintaining professionalism, impartiality, and accuracy in reporting was also emphasized as crucial during the election period.
The NUJ's statement reflects a broader commitment to ensuring that voters can exercise their rights freely while journalists report on the electoral process without fear. The call for collaboration among all stakeholders aims to preserve peace and uphold the integrity of the election in Osun State.
