14 students kidnapped from Islamic school in Niger State during maize harvest
Suspected terrorists have abducted 14 students from an Islamic school in Niger State, prompting a security response.

In a distressing incident, 14 students from an Islamic school were abducted by suspected terrorists in Niger State. The abduction occurred on Saturday in Pandogari, located within the Rafi Local Government Area, as the students were engaged in harvesting maize on their teacher's farm.
Reports indicate that the attack took place around 12:30 PM when the assailants invaded the farm, also kidnapping the teacher who was supervising the students. The Niger State police command confirmed the incident on Monday, clarifying that the number of abducted students was indeed 14, contrary to earlier reports suggesting there were 50 victims.
Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun stated that a joint security operation is currently underway to rescue the abducted students. He assured the public that efforts are being made to ensure their safe return. "On 31/10/2026 at about 12:30 PM, suspected bandits invaded Tungan-Bako village via Rafi LGA and abducted some persons working on the farm," Abiodun explained.
The ongoing security challenges in Niger State have drawn criticism from political figures, particularly from the Social Democratic Party. The party's governorship candidate, Jonathan Vatsa, condemned the state governor, Mohammed Bago, for his perceived inaction regarding the escalating insecurity. Vatsa accused the governor of neglecting the safety of citizens while focusing on election campaigns.
He highlighted that the security agencies in the state are hampered by a lack of operational vehicles and essential equipment, which are crucial for effectively addressing the rising tide of violence. Vatsa stated, "The government is only there to issue statements either condemning every attack or condoling with the people over the death of their loved ones without any cogent step to address the situation."
As the situation develops, the community remains on high alert, hoping for a swift resolution and the safe return of the abducted students. The incident underscores the ongoing security crisis affecting various regions in Nigeria, where abductions have become alarmingly common, particularly in rural areas. Authorities are urged to intensify their efforts to combat these threats and ensure the safety of all citizens.
