ASUU supports Taraba University lecturers' strike, demands swift resolution
The Academic Staff Union of Universities has expressed solidarity with Taraba State University lecturers, calling for immediate action on their grievances.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Yola Zone, has voiced its support for the ongoing strike by lecturers at Taraba State University (TSU), highlighting the legitimacy of their grievances and calling for immediate action from the state government. The union's demands include the swift implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement and the resolution of outstanding salary arrears for academic staff.
During a recent expanded congress meeting held in Jalingo, the Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Comrade Dani Mamman, addressed journalists, emphasizing the need for urgent attention to the issues raised by TSU lecturers. Mamman criticized the Taraba State Government for what he termed unnecessary delays in addressing the concerns of the university's academic staff, insisting that their grievances warranted immediate resolution.
Mamman articulated that the support for TSU lecturers stems from principles of justice, equity, and the protection of the rights and entitlements of academic staff. He noted that the Yola Zone encompasses seven public university branches across Adamawa, Borno, Taraba, and Yobe states, which include institutions such as Adamawa State University and Modibbo Adama University.
The ASUU coordinator pointed out that a report from the Taraba State Government’s fact-finding team, presented to ASUU on September 24, 2026, confirmed that other universities in the region had fully implemented the 2025 agreement. This finding raises questions about the state government's rationale for treating TSU lecturers differently from their peers in other institutions.
Mamman urged the state government to cease further administrative delays, particularly after the completion of a verification exercise in August 2026. He expressed frustration over the government's ongoing computations regarding alternative implementation levels, stating that consultations and negotiations had already been finalized, leaving no grounds for additional delays.
The union is demanding the immediate and complete implementation of the agreed remuneration framework without the establishment of new committees or further verification processes. Additionally, ASUU is calling for the settlement of all outstanding salary arrears based on the financial computations submitted by a tripartite committee.
Mamman also stressed the importance of adhering to the payment template outlined in the 2025 agreement and urged the state government to engage meaningfully with ASUU-TSU in a spirit of collective bargaining and mutual respect. The ongoing strike reflects a broader struggle for fair treatment and equitable remuneration for university lecturers in Taraba State, as the academic community seeks resolution to their longstanding issues.
