Oba Joseph Oloyede, the dethroned Apetumodu of Ipetumodu in Osun State, has initiated legal action against Governor Ademola Adeleke over the appointment of his successor. Oloyede's motion was filed at the Osun State High Court in Ile-Ife, where he is seeking to prevent the filling of the royal stool until his case is resolved.

The former monarch's legal battle stems from his removal due to a conviction in the United States for tax fraud and money laundering. In his application, dated September 16, 2026, Oloyede argues that he was not formally notified of any allegations or wrongdoing prior to his ousting. He claims that the governor signed the removal order on May 7, 2026, without providing him any prior notice of the purported offences.

Joining Oloyede in the suit are Princes Oyewusi Adewusi, Isaac Adewuni, and Abiodun Oyetoro, who represent members of the Latimogun Royal Family of the Aribile Ruling House. The defendants in the case include Governor Adeleke, the state Attorney-General, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Afolabi Adedeji, Chief Adesoye Babalola, and the Malefon of Ipetumodu, along with the Ife North Local Government.

Court proceedings faced delays recently as some defendants reportedly did not receive their hearing notices. During the session, only the claimants' lawyer, O. Ogbewe, and the counsel for the fifth defendant, Soji Oyetayo, were present. Ogbewe informed the court that the necessary processes had been served, while Oyetayo indicated he had not received the hearing notice and requested an adjournment.

Justice Dapo Adeniji presided over the case and decided to postpone proceedings until January 21, 2027, instructing that fresh hearing notices be issued and served to all defendants involved. This legal challenge highlights ongoing tensions surrounding traditional leadership and governance in Osun State, as the former monarch seeks to reclaim his position amidst serious allegations that have marred his reputation.
