In a significant escalation of military actions, US forces have conducted covert airstrikes on Iran's Qeshm Island, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. This operation, which took place on Monday, was described by US officials as a protective measure aimed at safeguarding American interests in the region.

The airstrikes were prompted by a recent incident in which Iran fired surface-to-air missiles at an American aircraft. A US military official revealed that on the same day, American personnel successfully intercepted a missile launched by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) from Qeshm, which was reportedly targeting merchant vessels navigating the critical Strait of Hormuz.

These airstrikes are part of a series of discreet military actions that the US has undertaken against Iran in recent weeks, largely kept out of the public eye. The decision to maintain secrecy around these operations appears to be a strategy to avoid signaling an intention to escalate into full-scale conflict.

Reports from Iran's Fars News Agency confirmed that loud explosions were heard on Qeshm Island early Tuesday morning, with the sounds also reaching the nearby Hengam Island and the city of Bandar Abbas. Qeshm Island is strategically important, located approximately 14 miles from Bandar Abbas, and plays a crucial role in Iran's control over maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage for about 20 percent of the world's crude oil supply.

This military action coincides with remarks from President Donald Trump, who indicated that diplomatic negotiations with Tehran are still in progress. On the same day as the airstrikes, Trump suggested via social media that a potential deal with Iran “could happen.”

As tensions continue to rise in the region, the US's dual approach of military action and diplomatic overtures raises questions about the future of US-Iran relations and the stability of the broader Middle East region.
