The Lagos State Government is set to establish between 50 and 100 small food-processing plants around its upcoming food systems and logistics hub. This initiative aims to promote local agricultural processing, enhance the value of food products, and strengthen the state's food supply chain.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made this announcement during the Executive Business Breakfast hosted by the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce. He emphasized that the development of an integrated system for food storage, processing, and distribution is crucial for the state’s agricultural sector.

The proposed processing plants will be strategically located around the logistics hub, which is designed to receive agricultural produce from various regions across Nigeria. This arrangement is intended to facilitate value addition, ensuring that food commodities are not only stored and distributed but also processed locally within the state.

Sanwo-Olu detailed that the logistics hub will encompass approximately 1,000 hectares, with layouts for small processing mills that will significantly enhance the value of agricultural products. He stated, “The second part of that logistics hub is that it’s also going to feed about 50 to 100 small food processing plants.” This infrastructure is expected to create numerous job opportunities and boost the local economy.

The logistics hub will feature facilities for both cold and dry storage, as well as silos and a large trailer park to support the efficient movement of commodities. Governor Sanwo-Olu described the facility as nearing completion and highlighted its potential to become one of the largest food systems and logistics hubs in Sub-Saharan Africa.

This initiative aligns with the state government's broader goals to enhance food security and promote sustainable agricultural practices. By establishing these processing plants, Lagos aims to reduce reliance on imported food products, thereby fostering self-sufficiency in food production and processing.

The establishment of the food-processing plants is part of Lagos State's commitment to transforming its agricultural landscape, ensuring that local farmers can maximize the value of their produce while meeting the growing food demands of the state’s population.
