The Kwara State Government is making significant strides in modernizing healthcare by phasing out paper-based medical records in state-owned hospitals. This transition to an electronic medical records (EMR) system is aimed at improving patient care and overall healthcare delivery across the state.

Approved by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the initiative will be executed through the Kwara State Hospitals Management Board as part of the HOPE-PHC Project. The board's Press Secretary, Adamu Sabi, announced that training for healthcare staff is set to commence in November 2026, preparing them for the new system.

The introduction of the electronic medical records system is expected to enhance administrative efficiency, strengthen patient information management, and promote digital transformation within the public healthcare sector. The board highlighted that this rollout builds on a previous pilot program that involved six hospitals and ongoing efforts to integrate digital solutions into healthcare services.

The EMR system aims to reduce the reliance on paper documentation, improve access to patients’ medical histories, and support evidence-based decision-making in hospital management. Abdulraheem Malik, the Executive Secretary of the board, praised the governor for endorsing this initiative, calling it a crucial step towards a more efficient and accountable public healthcare system.

Malik stated, "The adoption of electronic medical records would strengthen hospital operations, improve patient information management, and support more efficient clinical encounters across Kwara State." He emphasized that the planned rollout is part of broader efforts to enhance health information management, which also includes the establishment of a Data Management Committee in August 2026.

As the state prepares for this transition, the board is committed to collaborating with relevant stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the EMR system. Malik reiterated the board's dedication to providing more efficient, responsive, and patient-centered healthcare services to the residents of Kwara State, marking a significant advancement in the region's healthcare landscape.
