Nigeria's youth mental health crisis is set to take center stage at the upcoming 4th Vanguard Mental Health Summit, where leading experts will advocate for immediate action to address pressing issues such as substance abuse, suicide, and the adverse effects of social media. The summit, scheduled for October 9 at the Civic Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos, aims to shine a light on the critical need for improved mental health services for young Nigerians.

Themed "Advancing Youth Mental Health in Nigeria," the summit will delve into the impact of technology and social media on mental well-being, with a sub-theme titled "Mental Health in a Digital Age: Navigating Social Media, Technology and Wellbeing." Experts believe that the intersection of digital pressures and mental health is a growing concern that requires urgent attention.

Dr. Veronica Oluyemisi Nyamali, the President of the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria and Chief Consultant Psychiatrist at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital in Yaba, is set to lead discussions on mental healthcare, addiction, and suicide prevention. Her insights are expected to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of youth mental health in Nigeria and the necessary steps to improve it.

Joining her will be Prof. Taiwo Lateef Sheikh, a prominent figure in psychiatry and former president of the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria, who will focus on suicide prevention and mental health advocacy. Additionally, Prof. Mashudat Bello-Mojeed, a specialist in child and adolescent psychiatry, will address the unique mental health challenges faced by younger demographics.

The summit will also feature discussions on substance misuse, with contributions from Dr. Daniel Ikpechukwu, a US-based substance abuse counselor, and Dr. Ayantunde Kayode Ayankola, a Senior Consultant Psychiatrist in Drug and Addiction Treatment. Together, they will explore the multifaceted nature of addiction and its implications for youth mental health.

A diverse panel of experts, including mental health advocates, legal practitioners, and government officials, will engage in discussions aimed at identifying gaps in mental health services and proposing actionable solutions. The panel will address critical issues such as social isolation, family dynamics, and the barriers to accessing professional mental health care.

As the summit approaches, there is a growing recognition of the urgent need for a coordinated response to Nigeria's youth mental health crisis. With the increasing pressures faced by young people today, experts are calling for stronger support systems, earlier interventions, and greater accessibility to mental health services to ensure the well-being of the nation’s youth.
