As Nigeria gears up for the 4th Vanguard Mental Health Summit on October 9, 2026, stakeholders are sounding alarms about the potential loss of progress made under the Mental Health Act due to neglect and poor implementation. The summit, taking place at the Civic Centre on Victoria Island, Lagos, aims to address the pressing mental health challenges faced by the youth in the country, under the theme, "Advancing Youth Mental Health in Nigeria through Access, Action and Advocacy."

Renowned psychiatrist, Professor Taiwo Lateef Sheikh, has been vocal about the urgent need for the effective implementation of the Mental Health Act, which was signed into law in December 2022. Sheikh pointed out that while the legislation marked a significant milestone in mental health reform, the real challenge lies in translating the law into tangible benefits for Nigerians. He noted that Nigeria currently has fewer than 300 psychiatrists to cater to a population exceeding 200 million, indicating a severe shortage of mental health professionals.

The Mental Health Act replaced outdated colonial-era legislation and aimed to create a modern framework for safeguarding the rights and dignity of individuals with mental health conditions. However, experts have raised concerns that many of the structures envisioned in the law remain unimplemented, leaving a critical treatment gap in the mental health system. Sheikh emphasized that legislation alone is insufficient without the necessary funding, trained personnel, and effective service delivery.

"Legislation provides the skeleton, policy provides the direction, and financing provides the muscle. Closing the mental health systems gap requires all three to move together," Sheikh stated. He advocated for a shift in mental healthcare delivery, suggesting that services should be integrated into primary healthcare systems to ensure accessibility and continuity of care for patients.

The summit will also focus on the impact of digital technology and social media on youth mental health, a growing concern among experts. Discussions will explore the roles of various stakeholders, including government, families, and civil society organizations, in addressing mental health issues among young people. Topics such as youth addiction, suicide prevention, and the influence of social media on wellbeing will be central to the conversations.

Dr. Veronica Oluyemisi Nyamali, President of the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria, will deliver the keynote address, while other prominent figures in mental health will discuss various aspects of youth mental health. The summit aims to provide a platform for stakeholders to evaluate whether existing mental health policies are effectively translating into accessible services for Nigerians.

In a related development, the Nigerian government has initiated reforms to decriminalize attempted suicide, with plans to replace punitive measures with care and support for individuals in crisis. The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, highlighted the need for sustained investment in mental health services to prevent suicide and improve overall mental health outcomes.

As the summit approaches, the focus remains on ensuring that the Mental Health Act is not merely a legislative achievement but a catalyst for real change in the mental healthcare landscape of Nigeria. Stakeholders are urged to come together to address the critical gaps in mental health services and advocate for the rights and wellbeing of individuals facing mental health challenges.
