ASUU suspends strike, academic activities resume in three Lagos universities
Following successful negotiations, ASUU has called off its strike, allowing classes to resume at three Lagos universities.

Academic activities are set to resume immediately at three major universities in Lagos following the suspension of a strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The union announced the end of the industrial action on Friday, which had disrupted educational activities at Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH).
The decision to call off the strike comes after fruitful negotiations focused on improving staff welfare and addressing outstanding agreements. This development brings much-needed relief to students and parents who have been affected by the prolonged disruption.
In a joint statement, ASUU leaders emphasized the significance of this achievement in securing better welfare for lecturers while ensuring the implementation of previously established agreements. The statement was co-signed by prominent figures in the union, including Olusegun Babalola, Coordinator of the Steering Committee for ASUU-LASU; Grace Abimbola, Acting Chairman of ASUU-LASUED; and Murisiku Onigemo, Chairman of ASUU-LASUSTECH.
The union expressed gratitude to various stakeholders who supported them during the negotiations, including the media, civil society groups, and traditional rulers. They specifically acknowledged the contributions of pro-worker organizations such as the Joint Action Front (JAF), Education Rights Concern (ERC), and Campaign for Democratic Workers Rights (CDWR), which advocated for quality public tertiary education.
ASUU leaders also thanked traditional rulers for their interventions and recognized the patience shown by students and parents throughout the strike period. The statement highlighted, “Our struggle for improved staff welfare and the implementation of vital academic agreements has reached a significant milestone, largely due to the collective support of well-meaning individuals and organizations.”
With the strike officially over, ASUU confirmed that its members would return to their classrooms immediately. The union reiterated its commitment to maintaining high academic standards and promoting quality education in the universities. However, ASUU also indicated that it would continue discussions with the Lagos State Government to ensure a comprehensive resolution of outstanding issues related to its members’ welfare package.
As classes resume, both students and faculty look forward to a renewed focus on academic excellence and the fulfillment of educational objectives.
