Trump announces diesel supply deal with Russia amid rising energy costs ahead of elections
US President Donald Trump has secured a deal with Russia for a significant diesel release to combat soaring energy prices as midterm elections approach.

US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he has reached an agreement with Russia for a substantial release of diesel fuel, a move aimed at reducing soaring energy prices ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. This agreement comes as the United States and its allies continue to impose sanctions on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
In a statement on social media, Trump revealed that Russia will supply over 300,000 tons of diesel fuel to both the American and global markets immediately. The deal includes plans for an additional 500,000 tons in November and a further one million tons in subsequent months, with even larger releases anticipated thereafter. The Kremlin confirmed its commitment to supplying oil and oil products to the global market, marking a significant shift in energy dynamics amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions.
This development arrives at a critical time as voters express growing frustration over rising living costs, particularly in energy. Since late February, the average price of regular gasoline in the US has surged by over 46%, reaching $4.37 per gallon, while diesel prices have skyrocketed by 67%, now averaging $6.28 per gallon. These increases have been largely attributed to disruptions in global energy supplies, particularly following US-Israel strikes on Iran, which have impacted the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route for oil.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has criticized Trump's decision, labeling it as “unworthy” and “weak.” He expressed concerns about the implications of easing sanctions on Russia, emphasizing the need for solidarity among allies in the face of aggression.
In conjunction with the diesel deal, the US Treasury has issued a temporary license allowing Russian diesel to flow to global markets through April 2027. Trump emphasized that lowering energy prices is a top priority, particularly for American farmers, ranchers, and truckers who have been severely impacted by the rising costs.
The announcement of the diesel supply agreement coincided with a meeting between Ukrainian and US negotiators in Miami, where discussions aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict with Russia took place. US envoy Steve Witkoff described the talks as constructive, focusing on potential avenues to de-escalate the situation ahead of winter. The urgency of these discussions is underscored by recent escalations in violence, including a deadly Russian strike in Kramatorsk that claimed the lives of 30 people.
As winter approaches, the stakes are high for both energy prices and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Trump's attempts to mediate a resolution have faced challenges, particularly regarding Russia's territorial demands in eastern Ukraine, which Zelensky has firmly rejected. The situation remains fluid, with continued negotiations involving representatives from Britain, France, Germany, NATO, and the European Union as they seek to establish security guarantees and support for Ukraine's reconstruction post-conflict.
