In a heartbreaking turn of events, a 25-year-old Iranian man was executed just hours after marrying his fiancée in a prison ceremony conducted over the phone. Alireza Sepahi and Mahshad Keshani, aged 22, were among the many individuals detained during the widespread protests against the Iranian regime earlier this year.

The couple's wedding took place on October 5, 2026, with the ceremony officiated by rights lawyer Amirsalar Davoudi, who facilitated the event from Isfahan prison. The ceremony was attended by their fathers, who were able to connect via phone. Keshani, determined to marry her love before it was too late, proposed the idea of an informal wedding, despite the dire circumstances.

Davoudi recounted the emotional moment, stating, "Even now, I wonder how one young woman can possess such courage. I do not know how to come to terms with this." The couple exchanged vows with Keshani's family providing a symbolic dowry consisting of a copy of the Quran, saffron rock candy, and a single red rose.

Tragically, just hours after the wedding, Sepahi was executed at Shahid Alikhani Square in Isfahan, a location notorious for public hangings and a site of significant protests against the Islamic republic. This execution was part of a broader crackdown on dissent, with Sepahi being one of 12 men accused of killing security personnel during protests. Human rights organizations have condemned the trials, alleging that many defendants were coerced into making false confessions under torture.

Sepahi had narrowly escaped execution earlier in the summer after suffering a heart attack while being taken to the gallows. He fell into a coma but later regained consciousness, prompting the urgent wedding ceremony. Davoudi described the emotional turmoil of the moment, recalling how Sepahi broke down upon hearing of Keshani's wish to marry him. "Alireza was crying, and something deeply painful and beautiful happened. Even the prison officers began to cry," he said.

Following Sepahi's execution, his family faced further anguish when they were denied the right to bury him in their hometown, a final indignity in a series of tragic events surrounding the couple's love story. The execution has sparked outrage and protests against the Iranian regime, highlighting the ongoing struggles faced by those who oppose the government.

This incident underscores the severe human rights violations occurring in Iran, particularly against young activists and protesters. As the regime continues to face international scrutiny, the stories of individuals like Sepahi and Keshani serve as poignant reminders of the personal toll of political repression in the country.
